Woman, 4-year-old boy injured after being hit by dump truck in Wilmington, Delaware

WILMINGTON, Del. (WPVI) -- A 26-year-old woman and a 4-year-old boy were seriously injured after being hit by a dump truck in Wilmington, Delaware.

The crash happened around 11:15 a.m. Friday in the 100 block of South Union Street.

Their exact conditions were not immediately known. Authorities have not confirmed their relationship.

Doorbell camera footage shared by a neighbor showed the moments immediately after the impact, with the truck skidding to a stop.

Hours later, a child's shoe could still be seen underneath the vehicle.

A witness described a chaotic and emotional scene.

"It looked like a woman was badly hurt and the child was crying next to her, and there were two people trying to calm them both down," the witness said. "I became emotional right away. I had to distance myself because I just wanted to cry. I just saw she was badly hurt."

Witnesses also told Action News the child ran into the street before the woman tried to grab him. Investigators said the truck driver remained at the scene and is cooperating.

Neighbors said the incident left them shaken.

"I live right around the corner here, and I have a little one of my own, so it's just devastating. I'm just really worried," said Niki Kendall of Wilmington.

Wilmington police say the investigation is ongoing.
